Barking is almost always a symptom of something – loneliness, frustration, anxiety, fear, etc. Address the core problem and the barking goes away (mostly – dogs do need to communicate, of course). Return the collar and figure out what is going on with your dog.
In the rare cases that training doesn’t work, citronella anti-bark collars are not only far more humane, they are more effective than shock collars. http://www.westwoodanimalhospital.com/Bh…

Just make sure you understand that if a neighbor dog barks or another one of you dogs bark any dog with the collar on will get shocked, it does not have to be the dog wearing the collar that barks in order for the shock to work. I never recommend using them. They have small sensors you can place in your back yard that will create a high pitched noise when they bark. You can not hear it but pretty soon the dogs will associate that noise with barking and they will stop. http://www.ultimatebarkcontrol.com/ds_pr…

I have to disagree with the previous answerer. I rescue dogs and Ive used shock collars on several of them, and they have always worked. It has worked from anything from running off and not coming back when called to barking all night. I don’t think it’s inhumane at all. And it can start working as quickly as one night. What you need to do is make sure its good and charged up. You didn’t say how large your dog is. The smaller the dog the smaller you need to set the shock on. When the dog starts barking then you hit the buzzer. About 10 sec after that if it doesn’t stop barking then shock it. If the dog doesn’t respond to the shock you may need to raise the power a little. Make sure you put the collar on the dog tightly,so there’s a good connection. After awhile the dog should stop barking as soon as you hit the buzzer. This is much more humane than one of your neighbors poisoning him b/c he won’t shut up. Good luck.

you should know to return them NOW!
if your dogs are barking, you should TRAIN them not to, not SHOCK them not to!
in addition, they rarely work, and can elevate aggression, because they think whatever they’re barking at is what’s causing the pain!

Yes, to find out how it works, put it on yourself and make a loud sound, that will tell you all you need to know.
Don’t put it on your dog until you have done this, you could kill him with the damn thing.

i would never use them . they are cruel.
